Too many docs do the absolute minimum when a patient reports chest pain. They take some vitals, make sympathetic noises, and — if you’re lucky — maybe they’ll run a test or two.
If you don’t have any symptoms right there on the spot, that might be all you get… and if he doesn’t spot any red flags, he’ll tell you not to worry about it and send you on your way.
But the chest pain itself is a HUGE red flag — and when docs ignore it, they’re also ignoring what could be your first and possibly ONLY warning sign of an impending heart problem.
One new study finds that primary care docs couldn’t figure out the cause of chest pain in patients with no history of heart problems a stunning 72 percent of the time.
And most of them did NOTHING about it!
The patients were sent home, no doubt with vague advice like “call me if it ever happens again.”
Just 12 percent were given further tests.
That’s a huge and potentially DEADLY mistake, because over the next five and a half years, the patients with no diagnosis for their chest pain had a 36 percent higher risk of a heart attack.
Clearly, that pain was a warning — and it went right over the doctor’s head.
So, if you ever feel it yourself, don’t let your own physician blow you off.
You know your body better than anyone else, your doctor included. You know what “right” feels like, and you know what “wrong” feels like.
And while chest pain isn’t always a heart problem — it could be a muscle issue or something else — it’s always WRONG.
If it’s sudden and intense, don’t even call your doc. Go right to the ER.
If they can’t figure out what’s wrong… or if you went to your doc instead of the ER and he has no clue… don’t let them take a quick test and send you on your away.
Insist on digging deeper until they can tell you WHY you’re feeling chest pain.
You don’t have to go crazy and turn into a full-blown hypochondriac over this, but at the very least you want a blood panel, your inflammation levels checked, and an ECG.
If he STILL doesn’t find a problem, and the chest pain doesn’t come back, then at the very least consider it a wake-up call — especially if you haven’t exactly been on the straight-and-narrow.
