They say good things come to those who wait, but that’s not always true.
There are times when you need something and you need it NOW — and when you’re suffering from a life-threatening health problem, don’t wait.
Get on the horn… or get your spouse to call… and get in that ambulance ASAP.
New research shows yet again that too many seniors are putting their lives on the line by not seeking treatment for a stroke quickly enough.
Over in the UK, 92 percent of stroke patients — nearly ALL of them! — don’t seek help at the first sign of a problem, when every second matters most, and many wait as long as a day or more before seeking help.
While this study may have been done in England, you can bet the numbers here aren’t much different.
Like the Brits, most Americans don’t get help. Heck, most of them don’t even recognize the warning signs!
In the new study, for example, close to 60 percent didn’t know those signs — and they didn’t know they were having a stroke as a result.
Being a senior and not knowing the stroke signs is like living in Florida and not knowing the signs of a hurricane. It’s something EVERYONE should know, because failing on this one could cost you your life.
The Brits have come up with acronym for stroke victims: “F.A.S.T.” It’s short for:
- Facial drooping
- Arm weakness
- Speech difficulties
Feel any of the first three, and you’re running out of time — so get help ASAP.
But really, you know your body better than anyone else. You know when it’s right… and you know when it ain’t right. So, even if it doesn’t fit in with “F.A.S.T.”, seek help ASAP.
Here’s a case where every minute matters — and that’s not just a figure of speech.
A 2014 study found that with each minute you DON’T delay, you add nearly two days to your healthy lifespan. And every 15 minutes you DO delay steals a full month of healthy living from you.
That’s an extra month living with the crippling disability that can follow a stroke — or, worse yet, a month of your life cut short by an early death.
Wait 24 hours like some of the folks in the new study, and that’s EIGHT FULL YEARS taken from you!
So get help when you need it. Get it fast.
And once you’re on the mend, there’s something else that can help you in a big way: oxygen.
Oxygen delivered via a pressurized chamber can increase the levels in your blood so more of it gets to your brain, allowing for faster healing — leading to better neurological function and quality of life.
