There are plenty of things that come to mind when I think of depression — but “undertreated” isn’t one of them.
For years, pill-happy docs have been passing out antidepressants to anyone who looks a little down — and it doesn’t matter if they’ve got just a mild case of the blues or if they’re battling full-blown major depression.
DRUG ‘EM ALL!
Some 30 million of us — that’s one in 10 Americans — are popping happy pills right now…yet the mainstream says that’s not enough. The U.S. Preventative Service Task Force has declared that they now want doctors to “screen” every single American for depression so they can spot and treat whoever might be “at risk.”
Last I checked that was… let’s see… EVERYONE!
Let’s say you’re battling sleep troubles. Then, of course, your energy will be low– which means you may have problems concentrating and a crummy appetite.
Those are all signs of a classic sleep disorder. Yet according to the “screening tool,” you’re officially depressed!
Depending on how often they occur, even having just TWO of those symptoms will lead to a depression diagnosis… so your doc will put you on antidepressant drugs when all you REALLY need is a good night’s sleep.
The task force has made it so that docs are almost GUARANTEED to find depression in most folks, especially seniors.
Going by their screening guidelines, common hormonal problems — low testosterone and/or estrogen, thyroid dysfunction, adrenal fatigue — will get you a prescription for mood meds.
But those drugs won’t solve sleep disorders or hormonal problems. Heck, they don’t even treat depression — because studies show common antidepressants often can’t beat placebos.
So let me tell you the only “screening tools” you really need: Yourself and your loved ones.
You know when you’re not feeling right… and if it’s not obvious to you, it sure as heck will be to your spouse or your buddies.
If you’re struggling to cope with, say, the loss of a loved one, that’s not depression — it’s good old fashioned sadness and grief, and it’s NORMAL. Drugs may dull the pain, but they won’t help you get over what anyone would consider a real trauma. But, as they say, time heals all wounds.
And if it’s a sleep problem or a hormonal issue, you’ll need a naturopathic doc who can get to the bottom of it so you can get back to feeling like your old self again.
