What just a little soda does to your waistline

Sugar in the morning…Sugar in the evening….Heck, according to the U.S. government’s daffy new dietary guidelines, you could even have some sugar at bedtime!

Yes, the feds say you can get 10 percent of your calories from sugar…or more than 12 teaspoons of sugar a day for most people.

C’mon. Anyone with half a brain doesn’t need a study to know that’s unhealthy.

But since the federal panel that cooked up those guidelines doesn’t have half a brain to share between them, I’ve got some new research they need to see.

This one shows — again — that there’s no such thing as a healthy daily soda habit, because even a single can of cola a day can do real damage inside your body.

Drink a can a day for six years, and you could expect to gain nearly two extra pounds of belly fat (aka “visceral” fat) compared to those who don’t touch the stuff.

That may not sound like much. But believe me, it’s plenty.

Just one pound of body fat is roughly the size of a softball. One nasty, greasy softball tucked under your belt is bad enough…but two? That’s enough to give you a “spare tire” of fat that’ll spill over your waistline, with some to spare.

But forget what it LOOKS like. What it DOES is even worse — because belly fat is a major cause of metabolic dysfunction, which can set the stage for metabolic syndrome and, ultimately, heart disease.

Fat around the belly also puts the squeeze on your vital organs including your kidneys and liver.

When your kidneys get squeezed, you end up running to the toilet every 10 minutes — and that’s if you’re lucky. If you’re not, you’d better stock up on adult diapers.

Belly fat around the liver is even worse, and will set the stage for everything from painful gout to dementia.

The new study focused on soda, but daily sugar in any form will lead to those softballs — and eventually, you’ll be shaped like Grimace from Ronald McDonald gang.

So pass on the sugar…even when the feds insist it’s OK.
