Bad news for potato lovers

If you’re a “meat and potatoes” man, you’ve got it half right.

They certainly sound like the makings of a good meal, especially those hearty stews that hit the spot at the end of a cold winter’s day.

But while meat’s a treat, that spud’s a dud — because taters are nothing more than a worthless empty starch that will cause your blood sugar to spike and add pounds to your waistline.

Eat potatoes all winter, and you’ll be shaped like a potato yourself by the time spring rolls around!

I know you love your potatoes. But if you want to keep healthy, find something that’ll love you back.

The latest research confirms that, once they’re in your body, potatoes are handled more like refined carbohydrates than vegetables. Once your body starts breaking them down, it can’t tell the difference between a baked potato and sour cream and onion potato chips.

The study published in Diabetes Care finds that eating potatoes as little as twice a week will increase your risk of diabetes by 7 percent — which makes sense, considering refined carbs increase blood sugar, which in turn increases your risk of diabetes.

Eat them more often, and the risk climbs even higher — and if you’re a real “meat and potatoes man” and have spuds every day, your risk of diabetes skyrockets by 33 percent.

While any tater — mashed, fried, baked, or boiled — will up your risk of diabetes, your risk is highest if you like to eat them in the form of French fries.

The other big difference is that hot potatoes are worse than cold ones, because the heat causes the starch to be digested faster. When starch is digested faster, your blood sugar jumps faster, too — setting the stage for insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes.

And that’s hardly the only problem with potatoes.

What comes up must go down. The higher your blood sugar rises, the more distance it has to cover coming back down — and that big crash sets the stage for hunger…snacking…overeating…and weight gain.

If it’s any consolation, feel free to give yourself an extra helping of meat in place of those missing potatoes. Instead of meat and potatoes, you’ll have meat and meat.

Now THAT’S a meal worth having.
