I’ve always said that there are two types of people — and only two types — who claim winter is their favorite season.
Skiers and sadists.
Maybe it’s because I don’t like throwing my back out shoveling snow… or tumbling head over heels on icy steps… or losing feeling in my fingers and toes… but winter can’t end fast enough for me.
And the worst part is that at least once a winter, we all end up saddled with the hacking cough, stuffed-up sinuses, and throbbing noggin that come with a head cold. The next thing you know, you’re going through tissues the way Liz Taylor went through husbands.
If you’re anxious to escape from head cold hell, skip the sledgehammer cold meds that leave you feeling like a zombie (and may even damage your heart) and turn to the greatest virus fighter Mother Nature ever invented.
If you’ve never tried zinc lozenges to relieve your cold, I don’t blame you. Our federal government… presumably at the behest of the drug companies… has waged a disinformation war on zinc cold products since they hit the market.
And when I say war, I’m not kidding. About six years ago, the feds even strong-armed a top zinc manufacturer into paying a $30 million fine over claims that their product shortens colds.
And that’s not good government — that’s extortion. Because the science has proven time and again that zinc may be the best weapon you have for shaving days off a miserable cold.
A study from the highly respected Journal of Infectious Diseases found that zinc acetate lozenges (and you should always look for zinc acetate) can slash the length of your cold nearly in half, from seven days to four. The lozenges can even reduce days spent coughing from five to two.
Because zinc works by preventing viruses from replicating, you’ll find that zinc products work best when you start taking them during the first 24 hours of your symptoms.
Giving your body a steady supply of zinc can also help you ward off other serious diseases. A study on hundreds of nursing home patients found that those with adequate levels of zinc in their blood were only half as likely to develop life-threatening pneumonia.
If you have a loved one in your life who is getting a bit older… or frail… zinc could be a real life-saver. Pneumonia remains one of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States, and cases strike hard in the winter.
The only good thing about winter is surviving it, and I want to make sure you make it out of this winter feeling great. Consider adding a zinc supplement to your regimen and make sure you pop lozenges at the first sign of the sniffles.
They’ll keep a spring in your step until spring finally comes.
