Eat sugar? Yes you can! (If you insist)

This may surprise you. This may even shock you. But I’m about to give you permission to enjoy a sugary treat for your dessert.

Are you up off the floor yet? It’s true that just a few years ago I would have been adamant and said, “Your dessert should not contain sugar”——period/exclamation point/end of conversation.

That was and remains correct, but I admit my advice wasn’t practical since many people are addicted to sugar. I say “many,” but I would guess that a MAJORITY of Americans are addicted to sugar. And I realize that despite my best advice——and my most dire warnings——you’re still going to indulge from time to time.

Now don’t misunderstand me. Sugar ruins and even ends more lives than heroin, yet heroin gets the headlines and a fake “war on drugs,” while sugar gets advertised everywhere and even government officials will tell you to go ahead and have a little, it’s OK in moderation.

Don’t listen to them. They’re chained to the fat pockets of the snack industry, with companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi not only controlling what government officials say and do, but also controlling the media and feeding the international sugar addiction with billions of dollars in advertising.

So, what to do about all this sugar? If you simply eat or drink it, you will die. One very recent study finds that even the so-called moderate amounts of sugar that the soda industry claims to be safe will increase your risk of death from heart disease by a fifth, while the higher levels consumed by millions will double that risk.

With numbers like that, it seems impossible to eat sugar safely. But in 2014, clinical nutrition is very advanced. There is a way to eat sugar with impunity (whee!). I hesitate to say this. I know how weak you are. Aren’t we all?

Now, once I reveal this secret, I don’t want you to “desert” me (pardon the double entendre) for a life of cheesecake, cherry pie and chocolate chip cookies. I need your business, and you still need my information, right?

So here it is: Japanese scientists have created a synthetic fat-soluble form of thiamine (an important B vitamin) that will keep your sugar levels in the safe zone even if you eat sugar-containing foods.

Yes, I said synthetic. Don’t get me wrong; natural thiamine is wonderful stuff. But it’s water-soluble, which means it dissolves in water. Instead of holding onto it, your body excretes most of it in urine. In one end, and out the other.

The synthetic version, called benfotiamine, is fat-soluble, allowing your body to absorb it 500 percent more efficiently than ordinary thiamine.

Benfotiamine doesn’t reduce blood sugar so much as allow your blood cells to use the stuff instead of becoming overrun with it——putting the glucose to work so that it earns its keep inside your body instead of wrecking the place like a lazy teenager. (Yes, “lazy teenager” is probably redundant.)

Studies have shown that this form of thiamine can protect the cells and tissue that come in contact with glucose and——by extension——fight or prevent many of the conditions caused by chronically high blood sugar levels.

It can protect the endothelial cells that line your arteries, prevent or reduce inflammation and block the formation of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, which contribute to chronic disease as well as cause damage to arteries and critical organs such as the kidneys (not to mention sagging skin and wrinkles).

But you don’t have to take my word for it. There have been dozens of studies on benfotiamine over the decades. If you have Internet access, you can search the database of mainstream scientific research——called PubMed——and see some of the stunning results for yourself.

That begs the question. I can practically hear you asking it. If this stuff is so darned good, why haven’t I heard of it?

While benfotiamine is synthetic, which the drug industry adores, it’s no longer eligible for patent protection since it was first identified in the 1950s.  That means it can’t be sold at the usual ludicrous 16,000 percent markups that the drug industry adores even more. In addition, a single drug that solves blood sugar problems is not nearly as effective as the endless regimen of treatments required to keep it under control.

It’s simple math, and why cures always lose out to “treatment” and disease “management.”

I’m such a big believer in this nutrient that I take 2 capsules with every meal (400mg of benfotiamine), whether it contains obvious sugar or not, because you never know where the sweet stuff is hidden (especially in the commercial foods used in restaurants, and I do love to eat out).

If you’re healthy, benfotiamine will help ensure you remain that way even if you consume sugar. If you’re unhealthy, it may help stop and even reverse the damage caused by high blood sugar, including kidney and nerve damage.

I’m told many people who use it have been able to decrease or even eliminate their insulin shots. Insulin shots are dangerous, period. So the sooner you can stop them the better.

Of course you have my permission to try it for yourself (it’s easy to find online), but you should get approval from your own doctor as well, especially if you’re on medication. And, as always, never stop taking a drug without speaking to him first. There is another caveat——purchasing online is fraught with dangers. There are a lot of crooks out there and so be certain of your source. Cheaper is not necessarily better.
