Can’t stop at just one sugary treat? Of course you can’t. No one can——and it’s not because sugary junk food is so delicious. It’s because sugar delivers a sucker punch to your brain, altering proteins and hormones in ways that cause you to crave more, more, MORE.
The more you eat, the more you crave. And the more you crave, the more you keep eating. It’s a never-ending vicious cycle, and one new study puts the blame squarely on the fructose found in common table sugar and the high-fructose corn syrup used in snacks, sodas, “juice-drinks” and more.
When you eat, your body is supposed to tell you to stop at some point by releasing the hormone that signals “enough.” In the new study, however, the fructose didn’t trigger that stop sign.
Without that signal, you keep eating. And eating. And eating. Next thing you know, you can’t even see the numbers on the scale anymore——and diabetes, heart disease and more are banging at your door.
Now, I wish I could say that was the only change in the brain. But it’s not——not by a long shot. Sugar causes other changes——changes that don’t have the same immediate effect on your hunger and cravings, but are far more serious in the long term.
In one recent study on rats, sugar was shown to change hundreds——yes, HUNDREDS——of critical proteins inside the brain.
These rats were given either plain water or a sugared-up water with the same ratio of sweet stuff found in soda. Then, researchers peeked into the rat brains——and of the 1,373 proteins they identified, 290 had been altered in the unlucky rodents that had been given the sugar water.
The most immediate effect of these changes may be the infamous “sugar high,” or the hyperactive behavior some people (especially sugar-addicted kids) show when they’ve glugged a soda or gobbled down a candy bar. But the less obvious stuff is what you really have to worry about, because nearly a third of the proteins altered are proteins involved in the biggest and most devastating diseases of the brain——including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia and even cancer.
Yes, this was a study on rats. But don’t be distracted by the “r” word, because what’s toxic to rats and their brains is almost always toxic to us and our brains——which is why we can experiment on them, not people, PETA be darned (although if anyone from PETA would like to take the place of a rat in a study, I wouldn’t object).
These are just some of the latest studies, but they’re hardly the first of their kind. Just about every single study NOT conducted by snack industry stooges has found that sugar damages the brain (not to mention your heart, belly and more——but let’s stick to the old noodle today).
Enough. It’s time to get serious about getting rid of sugar. Aim for ZERO percent added sugar. Simply stop eating sugar, with the occasional exception of natural sugars found in berries, fruit or something natural and healthy.
Along with exorcising sugar from your life, ditch most of the rest of the carbs, which are converted into sugar in the body and cause the same damage in the brain (as well as the rest of the body). Stick to a diet fresh in animal fats and proteins. If you want a little color on your plate, add some fruits and vegetables. Just realize they’re entirely optional.
