LEAVE RUNNING IN THE DUST WITH A SIMPLE WALK

Sweat, strain and flat-out pain——anyone who claims to love running is either a liar or a masochist.

And if you put up with the misery of running yourself because you think it’s good for you, I’ve got some news to slow you down: New research confirms that you can run yourself ragged…but you can’t run yourself healthy.

Isn’t that what I’ve said all along?

The study of nearly 50,000 runners and walkers finds that people who walk actually have BETTER health and a LOWER risk of disease than people who run.

For example, running can cut your risk of heart disease by 4.5 percent when compared to sitting on your butt all day. But if you really want to avoid this condition, go for a walk instead——because the study finds a gentle stroll can slash that risk by 9.3 percent.

That’s more than double the benefit…without so much as breaking a sweat.

Walking is also nearly 75 percent more effective at lowering blood pressure than running. And if that’s not enough, it’s even better than running for helping you to avoid diabetes.

The key here is to make sure you actually walk more than you probably do right now. In the study, the walkers who got all those amazing benefits traveled the same distance as the runners.

They just weren’t in as much of a hurry to get there.

Now, I know some people who are stunned by the new research. And I’m sure the folks who sell overpriced running shoes are buying up as many copies of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology as they can so they can burn them and destroy the evidence.

But the fact is, there’s no surprise to this at all——because dozens and dozens of studies over the years have made two things perfectly clear:

1)   If you’re sedentary most of the day, then 30 minutes of running (or daily time on a hamster wheel) won’t slash your disease risk. One study last year confirmed that people who sit the most have double the risk of heart disease and diabetes——and that includes sedentary people who get daily exercise. Fact is, you simply can’t undo the damage of 8-10 hours of sitting all day with one furious flurry of activity at the end of it. Therefore:

2)   The real key to beating disease is getting regular and natural movement throughout the day. And unless you’re being chased, running yourself to the brink of exhaustion is definitely not natural. Walking, on the other hand, is about as natural as it comes.

So what does that mean for you? Getting fit has never been easier! Let me get your started on the gentle path toward good health:

STOP: If you run, quit. It’s bad for your knees, ankles, hips, and sanity. Running can even induce a heart attack. If you belong to a gym, turn your card in. Think of everything else you can do with that money. And if you own a treadmill or some other torture device, put an ad on Craig’s List and get rid of it. Give it away if you have to. If you’re like most people, that treadmill is just an oversized clothing rack anyway.

GET UP: Running may be bad for you. But as I mentioned, sitting is worse. So just get up and get moving. You don’t have to risk injury and you don’t have to break a sweat——just keep your meat out of the seat and let your muscles move and the blood flow. If you’re at home a lot, turn off the TV. (As you know, TV causes cancer of the intellect.) And if you work in an office, find an excuse——any excuse——to stand up and walk around.

INVEST: Instead of blowing a wad of cash on a gym membership or a piece of exercise equipment you and I both know you’ll never use, sink $10 into a pedometer instead. That’s a device that counts your steps each day. Aim for roughly 10,000 or more. By the way, you don’t actually NEED the pedometer——but if you’re trying to increase your activity levels, it’s an easy and inexpensive way to keep track.

ENJOY: Most people think of exercise as some kind of chore to suffer through. And most of time, it is. Who wants that? So if you don’t like walking, don’t walk——just find some other way to get moving. Golf, tennis, biking, swimming, surfing——you’ve got options. Even gardening will do the trick, with a recent study finding that raising a few vegetables or some flowers can slash your risk of obesity by half or more.

If you hate exercise as much as I know you do, that might sound too good to be true.

But it IS true——and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you running shoes, a gym membership, or a piece of exercise equipment.

Either that, or they’re masochists looking for company.
