Testosterone is a key element of a healthy life in both men and women. However, men produce and rely on more of it. Ironically, with the passage of time, we need more and create less. And with disastrous results. A lack of it has been tied to all kinds of afflictions, from a lagging libido to bone health issues to cancer. Obviously, you shouldn’t take it lightly.

But neither should you jump at the first thing claiming to replenish your body’s lost stores of the hormone. Hormone therapy is serious business. Researchers at the St. Louis University School of Medicine developed these 10 questions:

  1. Have you noticed a decrease in your sex drive?
  2. Are you experiencing weaker erections?
  3. Are your energy levels lower than they used to be?
  4. Are you experiencing a decrease in strength and endurance?
  5. Have you been getting shorter?
  6. Are you losing some of your “enjoyment of life”?
  7. Are you sad or grumpy?
  8. Have you noticed deterioration in your ability to play sports?
  9. Do you fall asleep after dinner?
  10. Is your work performance falling off?

If you answered “yes” to question 1 or 2–or “yes” to four or more questions overall–you may be a candidate for testosterone replacement therapy, according to the St. Louis medical researchers. If most of your answers were “no,” your testosterone level is probably right up there with that of the latest teenage rock star.
