LETTERS: Do you still need a milk mustache if you can grow a REAL one?

“I am not a wise guy but it seems strange to me that man is the only animal that drinks milk after weaning. Can you explain that?”

WCD: Yes, that’s an easy one. Man is the only mammal that continues to drink milk because he’s the only one with the ability to make a choice in the matter.

Most mammals are restricted in what they eat by their ecological circumstances. They can only eat what nature provides. Man, with his mobility and intelligence, has a wide variety of foods to choose from (granted, he doesn’t always make a wise choice). We’re one of the few mammals who eat snails, raw clams, raw oysters, and lobster.

You do, however, need to be careful about the kind of milk you choose-for you or your pet. The only milk fit to drink is raw milk. Pasteurized milk is unfit for human consumption, and skim milk should be used only for fattening up pigs.

Any domesticated animal can be milked and the milk used for human consumption: Milk taken from yaks, camels, goats, sheep, llamas, cows, buffaloes, and horses has been used as a staple food for centuries. For much more in-depth information on this topic, read my book titled The Milk Book.

“A recent anti-milk book, Don’t Drink Your Milk by Frank A. Oski, brought up the old argument about other mammals not drinking milk after weaning. Man is the only mammal, the argument goes, who drinks milk after the weaning age. Therefore it is abnormal and against nature’s intent.

Oski’s anti-milk book implicates milk in a wide range of diseases including anemia, arthritis, Lou Gehrig Disease, fatigue, allergy, and multiple sclerosis. But, tragically, the author didn’t understand that man, not the cow, is the culprit and that pasteurization and homogenization cause most of the ills he blames on milk. Arthritis and multiple sclerosis, two of the diseases he blames on milk, can actually be treated with raw milk.”

Incidentally, I am so desperate for raw milk that I am buying my own cow. If that’s not an option for you, I suggest looking into sources close to you for an alternative to the grocery store junk milk.
