Drink your way to a healthy prostate

There’s a new potential superhero in the fight against prostate cancer. Laboratory cell studies done by the University of Wisconsin Medical School have shown that deep red pomegranate juice, which is rich in antioxidants, is effective in killing prostate cancer cells.

According to Reuters Health, the report, originally published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said, “Prostate tumors shrank in mice infected with human prostate cells that drank pomegranate juice.”

Dr. Hasan Mukhtar, a professor of dermatology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, said, “Our study-while early-adds to growing evidence that pomegranates contain very powerful agents against cancer, particularly prostate cancer.” He says that because of the success with the animal studies, they now have a reason to test the effects of pomegranates on humans with prostate cancer.

This report is not the usual epidemiologic crapola (“3,462 patients were interviewed by telephone to determine”) but real science using real prostate cancer cells in a real laboratory. It’s exciting to see more and more conventional institutions gaining interest in using natural products to prevent and cure diseases.

Of course, the research was done on pure pomegranate juice, not the pasteurized, sugar-laden variety. But given the results of these studies, I think it would be worth searching for the pure kind, or even making your own.
