Rest in peace
I’ve been getting quite a few letters and e-mails from readers asking me about those posthumous rumors that Dr. Robert Atkins was obese when he died. The truth is, Bob Atkins was always heavy but never corpulent. The media is just doing its darndest to discredit him in any way they can.
Atkins died of heart failure secondary to bacterial myocarditis he contracted years ago. The serious head injury from his fall and a compromised heart led to heart failure. With heart failure comes a backing up of fluid (edema). This fluid accounts for the additional weight at the time of his death, and it was irresponsible for the media to release such a report so soon after his demise without checking for the truth.
The press is calling the Atkins diet a fad and they assume that he will soon be discredited. But, as you know, this “fad” diet is what every American, Canadian, and European ate for thousands of years. My prediction, as I said last month, is that the REAL food faddists-the soybean, starch, vegetable oil, Oreo cookie, and margarine crowd-will keep on fighting this battle, and the American public will keep on losing as long as they continue to buy into their propaganda.
