Colds…respiratory infections…even the flu
FIGHT IT ALL WITH THIS
Spring is so close you can almost taste it.
But first, you might taste something else——the nasty flavor of germy phlegm as you battle the sniffles, sneezes, and wheezes of a classic late-winter cold.
Everyone else is out sniffing the early flowers…and you can barely breathe.
It’s just not fair!
Well, it’s not rotten luck that’s keeping your nose plugged, your throat raw and giving you a barking cough that can be heard in the next town. It’s a rotten immune system——one so feeble that every little viral invader that comes along can set up camp and hang around for a while.
For some people, the immune system is so weak that they battle an endless parade of chest infections, colds, and other “winter” illnesses——even flu——all year ‘round.
But whether you battle a single cold every now and then or a respiratory infection that comes to visit more often than a pesky neighbor in a TV sitcom, there’s one remedy that can give your body the power it needs to take on all comers.
It can slash your risk of getting sick in the first place…and speed your recovery if you do happen to fall ill. And no, it’s not a drug or a vaccine. It’s my favorite all-natural immune booster:
What makes the sunshine vitamin so great is that it’s not a weapon against illness. It’s a weapons FACTORY. It doesn’t fight disease on its own——instead, it helps your immune system create antimicrobial peptides.
These peptides are like a crack private security squad, patrolling the body and eliminating the viruses, bacteria, and even fungi that cause illness and disease. If you have enough of them on duty, you may literally never get sick. And if you’re the type that’s prone to illness, you will get sick less, guaranteed.
One new study out of Sweden looked at people in that second group——the ones who never leave home without a travel pack of tissues, because they’re apt to start honking at any given moment.
On average, these were people who spent 42 days sick in the year before the study.
That’s six full weeks of illness!
Half of the 140 patients in the study were given 4,000 IUs of vitamin D3 a day, the other half drew the short straw and got a placebo. Too bad for them——because the ones who got the real-deal D3 had a much healthier year.
Overall, the D3 crew spent 16 days of that year taking antibiotics for respiratory infections. The ones on the placebo spent a full 33 days on the meds. The D3 patients were also 63.5 percent less likely to need those drugs at all and had 25 percent fewer symptoms.
Not bad, right? And that’s just the power of ONE immune-boosting supplement. Imagine what adding a few others to the list could do——including vitamin A, vitamin E, and fish oil. But let’s stick to D for today——because the infection-fighting powers of the sunshine vitamin go far beyond battling recurring respiratory diseases in Sweden.
- FLU: In a placebo-controlled study of Japanese schoolchildren, kids who got vitamin D3 supplements were three times less likely to get flu in general and 58 percent less likely to get influenza A. That’s a much better track record than the flu shot…with absolutely none of the risks.
- COLDS: In the same study, kids given D3 supplements were three times less likely to get the common cold than children given a placebo. There’s not a shot in the world that can make that claim.
- UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS: In another recent study, children in Mongolia given D3 supplements in winter——when sun exposure is especially low, and D levels sink along with it——had half the risk of respiratory infections.
- Bronchitis: In another landmark study, researchers found that low blood levels of D increase the risk of chronic bronchitis. The lower your levels, the higher the risk——and every 1 ng/ml boost in blood levels of D slashes that risk by 2.6 percent.
Of course, you don’t want to boost your blood levels by just 1 measly ng/ml. Most people need to boost them by 10, 20, 30 ng/ml or more——which means you?may be able to slash your chronic bronchitis risk by 26 percent, 52 percent,?78 percent, or more along with it.
Personally, I think the very real possibility of never getting a respiratory infection of any kind again is a good enough reason to load up on D. But that’s not all this super-nutrient can do.
Vitamin D can save you from just about every leading killer in America today, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. It can also prevent falls and frailty and can even help ward off death.
Just 20 minutes a day of direct sun exposure under ideal conditions will help the body generate roughly 20,000 IUs of vitamin D——or more than enough to get all those benefits and then some.
The problem, of course, is that most people don’t get 20 minutes of sun exposure of any kind, much less under ideal conditions. So unless you live someplace with the word “beach” in the name——and you get outside each day——add a supplement to your regimen. Think of it as an anti-death pill.
Your own needs will vary, but most people will benefit from 4,000-5,000 IUs per day. Talk with a doctor skilled in natural medicine to determine the amount best for you.
