BEAT CANCER FOR PENNIES A DAY!

Eat this. Swallow that. Take this drug. Hold your nose and try to down some nasty herbal concoction with an unpronounceable name. Everywhere you turn, someone is trying to profit off your cancer fears with remedies backed by bluster and marketing, not science.

Well, it’s time to cut through the bull here. The best way to beat cancer is to avoid getting the disease in the first place——and there are simple, safe, and downright CHEAP ways to make sure you never hear the “C” word from your doctor.

And it starts with something you’re probably already taking——something that can cost just pennies a day: Your daily multivitamin.

One new study on 14,500 male doctors given either a multi or a placebo and tracked for 11 years finds those who took the vitamins had an 8 percent lower risk of cancer.

That’s overall.

But these are men, and you know what cancer they’re diagnosed with most, right? Of course you do——it’s prostate cancer, the most over-diagnosed and over-treated cancer on the planet, because, in reality, it’s harmless most of the time.

Turns out the multis didn’t make a difference in those worry-free cancers——and once you removed all of them from the equation, the effect on everything else got much bigger.

Fifty percent bigger, to be exact——because multivitamins actually cut the risk of all cancers NOT of the prostate by a full 12 percent.

Now, you know I’m always looking for a catch in studies like this. And I found it——because this study didn’t, in my opinion, use a high-quality multivitamin. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a so-so multivitamin.

The study was centered around Centrum Silver, a mass-produced multi made by Pfizer. But here’s the problem with the Big Pharma approach to vitamins: They’re not out to deliver a vitamin saturated with the nutrients you need most. They’re out to saturate the market with a low-cost multi that people will buy based on TV commercials and flashy packaging.

Well, they delivered on that——because this stuff is cheaper than dirt (and I’ll admit, the packaging is pretty good). But you get what you pay for here, because Centrum Silver contains low levels of nutrients based on laughably outdated mainstream guidelines.

For example, it contains 20 mcg of selenium, a trace mineral that’s been shown to slash the risk of lung, prostate and colorectal cancers by as much as 25 percent and even cut the risk of death from cancer.

But that’s in a study that used 200 mcg a day––or 10 times the amount you’ll find in Centrum Silver.

It also contains 100 percent of the U.S. RDA for vitamin C, another known cancer fighter——but only at much higher levels (and to treat an existing cancer, you need even higher levels of vitamin C delivered intravenously). A high-quality multivitamin should pack in around 1,200 mg of C to be most effective. It can be challenging to find a multi with these levels, but an internet search will turn up some options like Trace Minerals’ Electrolyte Stamina Power Pak.

I could go on, but the point here is that I believe the levels of major nutrients in Centrum Silver are so pathetically low that it’s practically a miracle it lowered the risk of cancer by any degree at all, much less 12 percent.

So get a multi, but get one that’s actually worth something. It’ll cost more than Centrum Silver, but not much more——and it’ll be well worth every penny.

But a multivitamin is a starting point, not an ending point——and if you REALLY want to slash your risk of cancer, you can’t just take one pill and call it a day.

FOUR ALL-NATURAL CANCER FIGHTERS

?Fun in the Sun: You’ve heard the sun causes cancer, right? Well, you’ve heard wrong——because the vitamin D your body makes from sunlight can actually prevent cancers, including the deadly melanomas blamed (incorrectly) on too much sun exposure. Unless you spend plenty of time outside, get between 2,000 IU and 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 each day. Some people will need even more.

Go Green: Green tea gets so much press for its cancer-fighting power that it’s tempting to believe this is a triumph of marketing over science. But for once, there’s plenty of substance behind the hype, because the polyphenols in green tea can prevent or fight any number of cancers. In one new study, green tea drinkers had a lower risk of cancers of the colon, stomach, and throat. In other studies, green tea has shown that it can help prevent or beat cancers of the bladder, lung, pancreas, breast, prostate, ovaries, and more. Clearly, there’s something brewing here.

The ‘A’ Team: Speaking of melanoma, one recent study found that 1,200 mcg a day of vitamin A cut the risk of the disease by 74 percent in men and women older than 50. One of the best sources of A is the farm-fresh butter you’ve been told not to eat. Eat up!

Drink Up: Wine is famous for its cancer-fighting antioxidants. But if you don’t like wine, feel free to drink some whiskey instead. Single-malt Scotch has even higher levels of a cancer-fighting antioxidant called ellagic acid than red wine. Even beer——especially darker brews——contains cancer-fighting nutrients. Keep the habit moderate, and you’ll also slash your risk of everything from heart disease to dementia. I’ll drink to that!

I’ve got one more for the list, but it’s not something you take. It’s something to avoid.

And it’s something that’s a huge part of the typical U.S. diet——which is precisely why cancer is on the rise like never before.

Sugar is practically Miracle-Gro for many types of tumors. In fact, at least a third of all tumors contain insulin receptors. That means the more sugar you eat, they faster they can grow.

The sweet stuff may even turn a harmless slow-growing tumor into a certified killer… and what makes this so much worse is that you may not even know you have a sugar-eating tumor until it’s too late.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to help slash your cancer risk. Everything from broccoli to beta-carotene can help, depending on which form of the disease you’re looking to avoid.
