Gentlemen, Ponce de León had it wrong: The Fountain of Youth isn’t in Florida——it’s hidden in your own body’s hormone factory.

When you were a teenager, that hormone factory was like Old Faithful, shooting out more testosterone than you knew what to do with.

You remember what that was like, right? But that was then.

Today, Old Faithful isn’t so faithful anymore. Your hormone production has slowed to a trickle, and it shows. Big belly, low sex drive, loss of strength and overall poor health——most people, even your own doctor, will say you’re just getting older.

But these supposed signs of aging have less to do with the calendar and more to do with that trickling testosterone.

Now, if you’re a longtime reader you know I’ve backed testosterone supplementation for men and even some women (more on the ladies in a moment) for decades now. But if you’ve ever had any doubts, just check in with the 115 older European men who can now confirm everything I’ve ever said and then some.

These men started a five-year study miserable and fat. Let me revise that——they were obese in the objective clinical sense.

The average BMI was 34. Obesity begins at 30——and since “severely” obese begins at 35, this wasn’t just any bunch of fat guys.

It was a bunch of VERY fat guys.

But five years of testosterone injections every three months turned that around. They lost an average of 35 pounds, shrank their BMIs down to 29 (just plain “overweight” as opposed to “obese” or “severely obese”) and trimmed four inches off their waistlines, from 42 down to 38.

They also had improvements in blood sugar levels——going from 103 mg/dL down to 94. Since the “danger zone” for blood sugar is 90 or higher, they still have some work ahead of them——but testosterone therapy brought them most of the way there.

By the way, one of the myths of testosterone supplementation is that it will raise the risk of prostate cancer. This is untrue, and the study confirms it. After five years of treatment, the men showed no higher risk of the disease.

In other words, testosterone therapy done responsibly is no risk and all benefit, because along with losing weight and helping you to gain control of your blood glucose (as if that’s not enough!), proper testosterone levels will leave you vibrant, strong, and feeling younger now than you did years ago.

And let’s not forget that “other” benefit——the one you want more than all the rest:

Testosterone will turn you into a superstar in the sack.

Imagine all the strength, ability and endurance of a young man combined with all your years of experience. Now THAT’S how you please a woman!

Great benefits, sure. But that’s still not all of them——not by a long shot, since testosterone can prevent, ease, or cure dozens of conditions, including:

Diabetes: Testosterone plays a critical role in regulating insulin (just look at those blood glucose numbers in the new study). The lower your T levels, the more likely you’ll face insulin resistance and diabetes. And if you already have the disease, it’s not too late: One recent study showed that testosterone gel improved insulin sensitivity in diabetics (and yes, those same men got a boost in the sex department as well).

Frailty: Too many people assume age saps you of your strength. Not true——but a lack of testosterone will do that to you in flash. A 2010 study of 3,600 older men found that strength fades with testosterone levels——and men with the lowest levels are most likely to be or become frail. In other words, low testosterone will turn you into the living stereotype of the feeble oldster.

Heart attack and stroke: Testosterone can turn your heart into a fortress and slash your risk of stroke at the same time. One recent study found that older men with the highest levels had the lowest risk of both heart attack and stroke. Men with the lowest testosterone, on the other hand, were a third more likely to suffer that heart attack and 50 percent more likely to have a stroke.

Depression: If all of these other benefits aren’t enough, this hormone can also boost your mental health. One study from 2006 found that men over 55 with testosterone deficiencies had triple the depression risk of those with normal levels.

Of course, you’d be depressed too if you were obese, weak, and crippled in the sack…so maybe this is more of a “side effect” rather than a direct cause.

Much of the research is on men, because testosterone is the “manly” hormone after all. But the fact of the matter is that women need testosterone, too——they just need a lot less.

Testosterone is absolutely critical to blood flow, and when women fall short in the T department, they face a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. The “manly” hormone can also help women avoid two very female conditions, osteoporosis and breast cancer.

So, here’s the deal: Men and women alike, get your T-levels checked. For men, it should be between 500 and 1,000 nanograms per cc. Women need about a tenth of that, between 50 and 100 nanograms per cc (and ladies, don’t go any higher unless you’re trying to grow a mustache).

Along with age, drugs can also suck the testosterone right out of your body——especially cholesterol-lowering statins. One study found that men who take statins have double the risk of low testosterone.

That would explain all the sexual side effects linked to those drugs (drugs you don’t need anyway…but don’t get me started on them again).

Diagnosing low testosterone is only half the battle; correcting it is the other. Most doctors won’t even know where to begin in either department.
